The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) recently hosted its inaugural 'Corrections Wellness for Families' course at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois. The event was aimed at adult family members of frontline employees from seven correctional facilities in the southern region of the state. The initiative marks a significant step as it is the first time a state correctional agency in the United States has extended a staff wellness program to include family members.

Participants were guided through how corrections work can impact family life by IDOC's Staff Wellness Response Team (SWRT), alongside Greg Korando from Menard Correctional Center and James Hayes from Robinson Correctional Center. Following the course, one participant expressed that "Correctional Family Wellness brings education on a very specific and real level" and appreciated the newfound understanding and support provided by the training.

Another attendee remarked, "I wish Correctional Family Wellness existed 23 years ago!" She highlighted how valuable this class is for families of those working within IDOC, noting that it offers insights into the challenges faced by corrections employees and their families.

In announcing the launch of this program, IDOC Acting Director Hughes stated, "IDOC is thrilled to expand its wellness program to encompass the families of our dedicated correctional staff." Jonathan Brown, IDOC Staff Wellness Coordinator, added that this course is an essential addition to their efforts: "Recognizing the immense value of support between staff and their loved ones... we hope family members will be better equipped to offer informed support."

The 4-hour proprietary course covered various topics including job stress management when it intrudes on home life and effective self-care practices. It aims to help adult family members understand how corrections work realities can affect their lives while providing practical suggestions for dealing with common scenarios experienced by correctional families.

Additionally, IDOC plans to introduce a new 6-hour course titled ‘Correctional Family Wellness - For Staff’ which will focus on helping staff understand potential negative impacts on family dynamics due to lifestyle changes associated with corrections work.

This expansion into family-focused wellness programming is part of IDOC's ongoing efforts since 2017 to promote self-care among its employees. SWRT currently includes 200 members across various facilities who provide mental health support following critical incidents through confidential referrals and peer support programs.

Adult family members interested in participating in future classes are encouraged to contact SWRT or submit an interest form via email at doc.staffwellnessresponseteam@illinois.gov.
