Halloween presents a time of fun and excitement for both children and adults. However, the Illinois State Fire Marshal has issued a reminder about the potential fire hazards associated with Halloween festivities. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) reports that an estimated average of 9,200 fires were reported to fire departments in the United States over a three-day period around Halloween from 2017 to 2019.

Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that between 2018 and 2022, there was an annual average of 835 home structure fires initiated by decorations. These incidents resulted in an average of three civilian deaths, 30 injuries, and $14 million in direct property damage each year. A significant portion of these fires—47%—occurred because decorations were placed too close to heat sources like candles or hot equipment. Candles alone were responsible for starting approximately one-third (32%) of these fires.

Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera emphasized the importance of discussing fire safety with children before they go trick-or-treating: "Halloween is an exciting time for kids as they head out looking for all the tasty goodies, but before hitting the neighborhood, make sure you talk to your little ghosts about fire safety," he said. Rivera also advised on costume safety: "Explain and guide your trick-or-treaters around any open flames or heating sources that could cause issues with their costumes."

To ensure a safe Halloween experience, some precautions include using battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns and choosing costumes without long trailing fabric. Masks should have large enough eye holes for clear visibility. Children should be taught to avoid open flames and know how to stop, drop, and roll if necessary.

Additionally, dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper are highly flammable; therefore, keeping them away from open flames and heat sources is crucial. Providing flashlights or glow sticks as part of children's costumes can enhance their visibility to motorists who are advised to exercise caution during trick-or-treat hours.

Finally, ensuring smoke alarms are functional is essential for safety during this festive season.
