The National Federation of Independent Small Business (NFIB), representing small businesses in Illinois, has expressed opposition to the proposed adoption of California's vehicle emissions standards by the Illinois Pollution Control Board. The board is set to hold hearings on this matter.

Noah Finley, NFIB Illinois State Director, stated, "Illinois’ small business community overwhelming opposes the adoption of California’s vehicle emissions standards here in Illinois." He added that such a proposal could disadvantage small businesses compared to those in neighboring states. Many NFIB members are concerned about potentially scaling back operations or relocating if these mandates are implemented. Finley emphasized that businesses are already dealing with inflation and workforce issues, and additional mandates would increase operational costs.

The proposed rules include phasing out sales of new gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035, except for certain exemptions. They also call for significant reductions in sales of traditional medium- and heavy-duty trucks, with specific targets for electric vehicle sales by 2035. Additionally, there would be new testing and emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks.

The NFIB has provided written testimony on the matter as part of its advocacy efforts.
