Illinois reports first West Nile virus death of 2024
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has reported the first 2024 death of an Illinois resident due to West Nile virus (WNV). The individual, in their 80s and residing in Lake County, experienced the onset of WNV symptoms in mid-August and died shortly thereafter. In addition to this fatality, IDPH has confirmed nine non-fatal cases of WNV so far this year.

Nonfarm jobs rise in nine Illinois metro areas as unemployment rates increase statewide
Over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in nine metropolitan areas, decreased in three, and remained unchanged in two for the year ending July 2024, according to data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Over-the-year, the unemployment rate increased in all fourteen metropolitan areas.

New sales tax exemption for home-delivered meals effective July
Effective July 1, 2024, purchases of home-delivered meals provided to Medicare or Medicaid recipients where payment is made by an intermediary, such as a Medicare Administrative Contractor, a Managed Care Organization, or a Medicare Advantage Organization, pursuant to a government contract, are exempt from the Retailers’ Occupation Tax Act, the Service Occupation Tax Act, the Use Tax Act, and the Service Use Tax Act. This exemption is codified under 35 ILCS 120/2-5(49); 35 ILCS 115/3-5(36); 35 ILCS 110/3-5(35); and 35 ILCS 105/3-5(44).

Illinois sees rise in payroll jobs but increase in unemployment rate for July
The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today that the unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 5.2 percent, while nonfarm payrolls rose by 12,900 in July, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The revised unemployment rate for June was 5.0 percent, unchanged from the preliminary figure. However, the June monthly change in payrolls was revised significantly from an initial report of a gain of 10,400 jobs to a loss of 4,300 jobs.
