CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced a series of major construction projects in northern Cook County, as part of Gov. JB Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois capital program. The eleven projects represent an investment of nearly $148 million aimed at improving safety and mobility while creating jobs in the region.
"Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in Cook County and throughout the state," said Gov. Pritzker. "Through the largest capital program in state history, IDOT will be delivering improvements to build a more resilient, accessible, and equitable system of transportation for generations to come, while creating jobs and enhancing local quality of life."
Three projects are scheduled for completion in 2024, with the remaining eight expected to be finished between 2025 and 2026.
The detailed project list includes:
- Higgins Road (Illinois 72) over Willow Creek: bridge deck resurfacing, joint replacement, and repair.
- Interstate 94 (Edens Expressway) at Oakton Avenue: bridge replacement.
- Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois 21) at Dempster Street (U.S. 14): bridge deck resurfacing and joint repair.
- Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois 21) from Glenview Road to Kennicott Lane: resurfacing and ADA improvements.
- Golf Road (Illinois 58) over Poplar Creek Tributary in Hoffman Estates: culvert repairs.
- Rand Road over the Des Plaines River: bridge replacement.
- Illinois 53 from Rand Road (U.S. 12) to Algonquin Road (Illinois 62): various structural replacements and modernizations.
- Illinois 53 at multiple intersections including Kirchoff Road and Palatine Road: superstructure replacement, retaining walls, shoulder reconstruction, resurfacing, and traffic signal modernization.
- Illinois 53 at Euclid Avenue: bridge rehabilitation.
- Mannheim Road (U.S. 12) from Prospect Avenue to south of Higgins Road: resurfacing and ADA improvements.
- Irving Park Road (Illinois 19) from Mitchell Boulevard to Roselle Road: resurfacing and ADA improvements.
"Rebuild Illinois continues to strengthen our state's transportation infrastructure while driving economic growth," stated state Sen. Mark Walker.
State Rep. Nabeela Syed added, "With the thousands of hours Illinoisans spend commuting every day, stable bridges and smooth roads are vital to public safety."
State Rep. Marty Moylan highlighted the initiative's economic benefits saying it would promote job creation across the state.
Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois invests $33.2 billion over six years into the state's transportation system covering roads, bridges, transit systems, waterways, railways, aviation facilities, as well as bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
By Year Five of Rebuild Illinois approximately $16 billion has been spent on improving highways spanning over 6,541 miles along with upgrades to bridges and additional safety measures statewide.
"Under Gov. Pritzker's leadership IDOT continues to deliver projects that strengthen our entire multimodal system," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman urging drivers to stay cautious through work zones this construction season.
