The Illinois State Museum has been awarded a 2024 Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) for its "Growing Up X" exhibition, which explores the childhood experiences of Generation X.

The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 79th year, is considered the most prestigious recognition for achievements in preserving and interpreting state and local history. The Illinois State Museum's exhibit was the first in the nation to focus on Generation X, individuals born between 1965 and 1980. The exhibition delved into various aspects of the era including fashion, technology, music, entertainment, and significant social issues such as the Cold War, AIDS crisis, and War on Drugs.

Utilizing interpretive text, contemporary photos, vintage objects, and interactive elements, "Growing Up X" presented a comprehensive narrative of growing up during this period. A notable section of the exhibit was created in collaboration with Lindblom Technical High School’s alumni association in Chicago to provide a unique perspective on the Gen X experience through the lens of the school.

The AASLH national awards highlight outstanding contributions in state and local history preservation and interpretation. These awards not only honor significant achievements but also aim to bring public recognition to both small and large organizations that contribute to this field.

Established in 1877, the Illinois State Museum aims to inspire exploration of Illinois' past and present to enrich everyday life while promoting stewardship of cultural and natural resources. Headquartered in Springfield with branches in Lewistown and Lockport, it is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
