The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) has announced that it will start accepting and processing 2025 tax returns on January 27. This date aligns with the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) commencement for federal income tax return submissions.

This year, Illinois will be part of the IRS Direct File program. Eligible taxpayers can use this program to electronically complete their 2024 federal tax returns without any cost. To determine eligibility, individuals are encouraged to visit https://directfile.irs.gov. Once a federal return is filed through Direct File, the system will guide taxpayers to MyTax Illinois, the state's free income tax filing platform, enabling them to file their state returns.
